Testing a true one-rep max — the single heaviest weight you can lift for exactly one repetition with good form — is useful for programming strength training, but it's also fatiguing and carries injury risk, especially for lifts like the squat and deadlift. Fortunately, you don't need to grind out an all-out single to know roughly where your max stands.

Our one rep max calculator estimates your 1RM from a set you've actually performed — say, 185 pounds for 5 reps on the bench press — using the Epley formula, one of the most widely used and validated submaximal-testing equations in strength training. Why One Rep Max Matters

The One Rep Max Formula, Explained

1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30)

Where: weight = the load lifted (in pounds or kilograms), reps = the number of repetitions completed to (or near) failure with that weight, 1RM = the estimated maximum weight liftable for a single repetition. This is the Epley formula, developed by Boyd Epley, and it is most accurate for rep ranges of roughly 1-10; accuracy declines noticeably beyond 10-12 reps because fatigue and muscular endurance start to dominate over pure strength. An alternative is the Brzycki formula: 1RM = weight × 36/(37 − reps), which tends to produce slightly lower estimates than Epley, especially as reps increase, and is undefined at 37 reps (a theoretical ceiling of the formula). Neither formula accounts for individual differences in muscle fiber type, technique efficiency, or fatigue resistance, so treat the result as a well-informed estimate rather than an exact figure.

How to Use the One Rep Max: Step by Step

  1. Perform a submaximal set

    Choose a weight you can lift for 2-10 reps with good form, ideally stopping a rep or two before failure. Avoid using warm-up sets or sets taken to complete muscular failure, as both reduce accuracy.

  2. Enter the weight lifted

    Input the exact load used, including the bar weight for barbell lifts (e.g., 45 lb bar + 2×70 lb plates = 185 lb total).

  3. Enter the number of reps completed

    Input how many clean repetitions you completed with that weight. Only count reps performed with full range of motion and controlled form.

  4. Compare Epley and Brzycki results

    Review both formula estimates. If they're close, trust the average; if they diverge significantly, lean toward the more conservative (lower) number for programming purposes.

  5. Apply training percentages

    Use the estimated 1RM to calculate working weights for percentage-based programs, e.g., 80% of a 250 lb estimated max = 200 lb working sets.

Result

Estimated 1RM: 346.5 lb (Epley) or 333.5 lb (Brzycki). Because the formulas are most accurate at low rep counts, Tomás can be fairly confident a true max attempt near 335-345 lb is realistic with a proper warm-up.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Estimating from a set taken to complete failure — pushing reps to failure introduces fatigue that skews the formula toward underestimating true 1RM, since the formulas assume reps were performed with some reserve.
  • Using rep counts above 10-12 — both Epley and Brzycki lose accuracy at high reps because muscular endurance, not raw strength, increasingly determines how many reps you can complete.
  • Ignoring technique breakdown — if form degraded significantly by the final rep of the set, the estimate will overstate what you could actually lift safely for one clean rep.
  • Treating the estimate as an exact number for max attempts — use the estimate to guide warm-up progressions toward a true max attempt, not as the max itself, since individual variation of 5-10% from the formula is common.
