Why Body Fat Percentage Matters

Where: waist = circumference at the navel in inches, neck = circumference just below the larynx in inches, hip = circumference at the widest point of the hips in inches (women only), height = standing height in inches, log10 = base-10 logarithm.

The formula works by using waist-to-neck (and waist+hip-to-neck for women) as a proxy for abdominal fat relative to a stable skeletal reference point (the neck, which changes little with fat gain or loss).   • Measuring the waist too tightly or after sucking in — this artificially lowers the result. Measure standing relaxed, breathing normally, with the tape snug but not compressing skin.
  • Measuring at the wrong waist location — the Navy method specifies the navel, not the narrowest point of the torso, which many people mistakenly use.
  • Comparing Navy method results directly to DEXA scan or caliper results and expecting an exact match — the Navy method typically has a margin of error of 3–4 percentage points versus DEXA.
