The Heart Rate Zones Formula, Explained

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Relying solely on 220 − age for precise training decisions — this formula has a documented margin of error of roughly ±10-12 bpm, meaningful enough to put you in the wrong zone; the Tanaka or Karvonen methods are more individualized.
  • Measuring resting heart rate at the wrong time — resting HR should be taken first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, not after coffee, stress, or activity, all of which inflate the reading and skew Karvonen calculations.
