To convert horsepower to kilowatts, multiply by 0.7457. To convert watts or kilowatts back to horsepower, divide by the same factors (745.7 for watts, 0.7457 for kW).

Note that a few regional variants exist — metric horsepower (PS, used in some European specifications) equals approximately 735.5 watts, slightly less than mechanical horsepower. This calculator uses the mechanical horsepower standard (745.7 W), which is the most common definition used in the US and in most engineering references.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing mechanical horsepower with metric horsepower (PS) — metric horsepower is about 1.4% smaller than mechanical horsepower, a small but real difference in precise engineering comparisons.
  • Mixing up power (watts, hp, kW) with energy (kWh, joules) — power is the rate of energy use, so a 1,500-watt heater run for 2 hours uses 3 kWh of energy, not 1,500 watts of energy.
  • Assuming horsepower and kilowatts are roughly equal — they differ by about 34% (1 hp = 0.7457 kW), enough to significantly misjudge an engine or motor's true output if treated as interchangeable.
