Readability is not a matter of opinion — it can be measured. The Flesch Reading Ease score, developed by Rudolf Flesch in 1948, quantifies how easy a piece of text is to read based on sentence length and word complexity, producing a score from roughly 0 (very difficult, graduate-level) to 100 (very easy, plain language). A related metric, the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, uses similar inputs in a different formula — 0.39 × (words/sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables/words) − 15.59 — to express the same complexity as a U.S. school grade level instead of a 0–100 score.
