"5 min read" tags at the top of blog posts and Medium articles aren't guesses — they're calculated from word count and average reading speed, and you can calculate the same number for any piece of writing. Our reading time calculator takes your pasted text (or a word count you already know) and estimates how long it takes an average adult to read it silently, based on published reading-speed research.
Adult silent reading speed for everyday, non-technical text typically falls between 200 and 250 words per minute, with 225–238 words per minute commonly cited as a reasonable average in reading research. The calculator uses this range to give you a realistic estimate rather than a single arbitrary number, so you can label a blog post accurately, plan how much content fits in a newsletter, or gauge how long a reading assignment will actually take.
This is distinct from speaking time — reading silently is faster than reading aloud — so if you're estimating a speech or presentation instead of an article, use the dedicated speaking time calculator.
