The average adult reads between 200 and 250 words per minute (WPM) for casual material, but reading speed varies enormously depending on the reader, the text's difficulty, and the purpose of reading. Students juggling multiple textbook chapters, articles, and novels each week benefit from knowing their actual WPM — it turns a vague "I'll read this later" into a concrete time estimate they can block into a schedule.

Our reading speed calculator works two ways. The Reading Speed Formula, Explained

WPM = Total Words ÷ Time in Minutes

Where: Total Words = the number of words in the passage read, and Time in Minutes = how long it took to read it (including decimal fractions, e.g., 90 seconds = 1.5 minutes). To reverse the calculation and estimate reading time for a new text, rearrange the formula: Time in Minutes = Total Words ÷ WPM.

Most word processors and websites display word counts directly, or you can estimate word count by multiplying the number of lines by the average words per line, or using a rough standard of about 250–300 words per double-spaced page and 500–600 words per single-spaced page.

For accurate personal WPM, use a timed passage of at least 300–500 words — shorter samples are more prone to timing error, since the first few seconds of reading often include an adjustment period.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Timing only a very short passage (under 100 words), which produces an unreliable WPM because of the initial adjustment period before reading settles into a steady rhythm.
  • Comparing WPM across wildly different text types — a novel and a dense academic paper are not comparable, since technical vocabulary and unfamiliar concepts slow reading regardless of skill.
  • Chasing raw speed without checking comprehension — a high WPM with poor retention is worse for studying than a moderate WPM with strong understanding.
