Find the difference between two dates

How many days until your project deadline? How many weeks have passed since your last performance review? How many days between two contract dates for prorating rent? These are everyday questions that sound simple but involve calendar math that trips up even careful people — months have different lengths, leap years add days, and crossing year boundaries confuses manual counting.

Our free date calculator eliminates the guesswork. Enter any two dates and instantly see the exact number of days, weeks, months, and years between them. You can also add or subtract any number of days from a date to find a future or past date — useful for project planning, legal deadlines, subscription renewals, and warranty calculations.

Why Date Difference Matters

Date arithmetic underlies a surprising number of high-stakes real-world situations. Legal contracts specify performance periods in days. Loan agreements accrue interest daily. Employment notices require a specific number of days. Prescription refill schedules, lease term calculations, project milestone planning, trial period tracking, and travel visa durations all require accurate date arithmetic. Getting these wrong has financial or legal consequences.

The Date Difference Formula, Explained

Days between dates = (End date − Start date) in milliseconds ÷ 86,400,000

Computers store dates as the number of milliseconds since January 1, 1970 (Unix epoch). To find days between two dates: convert each to milliseconds, subtract start from end, divide by 86,400,000 (milliseconds in a day). For months and years, the calculation is more complex because months have 28–31 days and must track calendar crossings. Adding days to a date requires tracking month-end rollovers, leap years, and DST changes. Our calculator handles all of these automatically.

How to Use the Date Difference: Step by Step

  1. Select calculation type

Choose "Days between two dates" or "Add/subtract days from a date."

  2. Enter dates

Use the date picker or type in DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY format. Both past and future dates are supported.

  3. Choose whether to include/exclude end date

For deadline counting, include the end date. For "days worked" calculations, you typically exclude the last day (just as you do not count both ends of a fence post).

  4. Read the result

See total days, broken down into years + months + days for the human-readable version, plus total weeks and total hours.

Date Difference Examples: Real-World Scenarios

1

Prorating Rent for a Mid-Month Move-In

A tenant moves in on March 15 and rent is due April 1. Landlord needs to calculate days in March to prorate $2,400/month rent.

Start date:March 15
End date:March 31
Monthly rent:$2,400

Calculation

Days: March 15–31 = 17 days. March has 31 days. Daily rate = $2,400/31 = $77.42. Prorated rent = 17 × $77.42

Result

Prorated rent: $1,316.13 for the remainder of March.

2

Employment Notice Period Calculation

An employee resigns on June 10 with a 2-week notice requirement. Last day of work?

Resignation date:June 10, 2026
Notice period:14 days

Calculation

June 10 + 14 calendar days = June 24

Result

Last working day: June 24, 2026. If the employer requires business days only: 10 business days from June 10 = June 24 (same in this case, skipping June 13–14 weekend).

3

Product Warranty Expiry

A laptop was purchased November 28, 2024 with a 2-year warranty. When does it expire?

Purchase date:November 28, 2024
Warranty period:2 years = 730 days (731 with leap year 2024)

Calculation

November 28, 2024 + 731 days (2025 is not a leap year, 2024 was) = November 28, 2026

Result

Warranty expires November 28, 2026. Register the product before this date if registration is required to activate the warranty.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing "calendar days" and "business days" — most legal contracts specify calendar days unless explicitly stating "business days." Know which applies before calculating deadlines.
  • Off-by-one errors — "from March 1 to March 31" is 30 days if you don't count March 1, or 31 days if you count both endpoints. Specify inclusive/exclusive before counting.
  • Forgetting leap years when adding a full year — "one year from February 28, 2023" is February 28, 2024 (a leap year), not February 29.

Tips & Tricks

  • For project timelines, build in buffer when calculating from today — use "X working days" not calendar days to account for weekends and holidays.
  • Loan interest is typically calculated on calendar days (including weekends). A loan that spans 30 days starting November 1 covers through November 30, including both weekends.

Accurate date arithmetic is surprisingly consequential in daily life. Whether you're calculating legal deadlines, tracking warranties, planning projects, or prorating costs, our date calculator gives you the precise answer instantly.
