R-value is the separate, equally important spec: it measures how well the insulation resists heat flow, and required R-value depends on your climate zone and which part of the house you're insulating (attics generally need the highest R-value, followed by walls, then floors over unheated spaces). Higher R-value products are thicker and often have lower coverage per package, so choosing a higher R-value can increase the number of packages needed for the same square footage — always calculate coverage using the specific product's label, not a generic number, once you've selected the R-value appropriate for your climate zone.

For blown-in or loose-fill insulation, the equivalent calculation is done in bags per square foot at a target depth, which is also listed on the product's coverage chart based on the desired R-value.

How to Use the Insulation Calculator: Step by Step

  1. Determine your target R-value

    Divide your total area by the coverage per package, add 10% for cutting waste around obstructions, and round up to the next whole package.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying insulation based only on square footage without checking R-value against your climate zone — you can have the exact right coverage and still be under-insulated for your region's winters or summers.
  • Assuming all bags of the same nominal size cover the same square footage — coverage per bag changes with R-value and thickness, so always check the specific product's label rather than reusing a number from a different project.
  • Compressing batts to fit a cavity that's too shallow, which reduces the effective R-value significantly — insulation needs to fill the cavity at its full loft to perform as rated.
