Where: Wall Area is the total square footage of walls (and ceiling, if applicable) to be covered — calculated as perimeter × height for walls, or length × width for a ceiling — Sheet Area is 32 sq ft for a standard 4×8 sheet or 48 sq ft for a larger 4×12 sheet, and 1.10 is the standard 10% waste factor to cover cuts around doors, windows, outlets, and corners.

The result is always rounded up to the next whole sheet (CEILING), since drywall can only be purchased in full sheets. For a room's wall area, calculate the perimeter (sum of all four wall lengths), multiply by the ceiling height to get total wall square footage, then apply the sheet-size division and waste factor. If you're also drywalling the ceiling, calculate ceiling area (length × width) separately and add it to the wall area before dividing by sheet size — many installers actually prefer to calculate ceiling sheets separately since ceiling installation typically has less waste than wall cutting around openings.

Most estimators do not subtract door and window openings from the wall area unless those openings are unusually large (like a garage door or picture window), because the 10% waste factor is designed to absorb typical door/window cutting waste.

    Add up the length of all four walls to get the perimeter, then measure the ceiling height. Multiply perimeter × height to get total wall square footage.

  3. Choose your sheet size

    Select standard 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft, easier to handle, more seams) or 4×12 sheets (48 sq ft, fewer seams but heavier and harder to maneuver, especially alone).

  4. Apply the waste factor and round up

    The calculator adds 10% for cutting waste and rounds up to the nearest full sheet, since partial sheets aren't sold and cut-offs are rarely large enough to reuse.

Total area = 352 + 120 = 472 sq ft. Sheets = CEILING((472 / 32) × 1.10) = CEILING(16.225) = 17

A 20 ft × 20 ft garage with 9 ft ceilings is being drywalled on all four walls using larger 4×12 sheets to minimize seams.

Calculation

Perimeter = 2 × (20 + 20) = 80 ft. Wall area = 80 × 9 = 720 sq ft. Sheets = CEILING((720 / 48) × 1.10) = CEILING(16.5) = 17

Result

You need 17 sheets of 4×12 drywall — fewer total seams than 4×8 sheets would produce, though each sheet is heavier and harder to hang solo.
