The Ratio Calculator Formula, Explained

Simplified Ratio = a÷GCF(a,b) : b÷GCF(a,b)

Where: a and b are the two numbers in the ratio, and GCF(a,b) is the greatest common factor of a and b — the largest number that divides evenly into both.

To simplify a ratio, find the GCF of both numbers, then divide each number in the ratio by that GCF. The result is the ratio in its lowest terms, meaning no number larger than 1 can divide evenly into both parts.

For ratios with three or more terms (like 4:6:8), find the GCF of all the numbers together, then divide each term by that shared GCF. To check if two ratios are equivalent, simplify both to lowest terms and compare — or cross-multiply (a:b equals c:d if a×d = b×c).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Dividing by a common factor that isn't the greatest one — for example, simplifying 24:36 to 12:18 (divided by 2) is technically equivalent but not fully simplified; the true simplest form is 2:3.
  • Confusing a ratio (2:3) with a fraction of the whole — a 2:3 ratio means 2 parts to 3 parts, so the total is 5 parts, and each item represents 2/5 and 3/5 of the whole, not 2/3.
  • Treating ratio order as unimportant — a 2:3 ratio is different from a 3:2 ratio; always keep terms in the same order as the original quantities.
  • Adding or subtracting ratios directly instead of using proportional scaling — ratios must be scaled by multiplication/division, not combined with addition.
