Engagement rate by reach is the fairest measure of content quality on modern discovery-driven platforms:

It separates content quality from distribution: Reach varies wildly post to post — the algorithm may show one Reel to 8,000 people and the next to 80,000. Follower-based ER swings with that luck; ERR does not. If your ERR is stable while reach fluctuates, your content quality is consistent and the variance is distribution.

It is honest about viral posts: A viral post can have a huge absolute engagement number but a mediocre ERR, meaning it spread widely but interacted shallowly. Conversely, a niche post with modest reach and a high ERR is a signal to make more content like it.

It evaluates non-follower content: For TikTok and Reels, where the majority of views often come from non-followers, ERR is the only engagement metric that reflects reality. Follower-based ER can exceed 100% on a viral TikTok, which tells you nothing.

Benchmark note: because reach is almost always smaller than (or overlapping differently with) follower count on standard posts, ERR values run higher than follower-based ER. Where follower ER averages 1–3%, healthy ERR figures commonly land in the 5–10%+ range depending on platform and format — so never compare an ERR number against follower-ER benchmarks.

The Engagement Rate by Reach Formula, Explained

ERR (%) = (Total Engagements ÷ Accounts Reached) × 100

Total Engagements is the sum of likes, comments, shares, and saves on the post. Accounts Reached is the number of unique accounts that saw the post at least once — found in Instagram post insights under 'Accounts reached' or in TikTok analytics as unique viewers.

Use reach, not impressions. Impressions count every view including repeats, so dividing by impressions understates your rate and mixes two different questions. Reach counts unique people, which is what an engagement rate should be normalized against.

Interpreting the number: ERR benchmarks run meaningfully higher than follower-based ER because the denominator only includes people who actually saw the content. A post can have a modest 2% follower ER but a strong 9% ERR if the algorithm simply didn't distribute it widely — that combination tells you the content was good and the distribution was the problem, which is exactly the diagnostic power this metric provides.

For account-level analysis, compute ERR for your last 10–20 posts and look at the average and the spread. A tight spread means consistent quality; big outliers identify your best and worst content for pattern analysis.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using impressions instead of reach — impressions count repeat views, inflating the denominator and deflating your rate. Always use unique accounts reached.
  • Comparing ERR against follower-ER benchmarks — ERR runs structurally higher. A 5% ERR is not 'excellent' just because 5% follower ER would be.
  • Ignoring reach size when comparing ERR — a 15% ERR on 2,000 reach and a 9% ERR on 90,000 reach are both wins, but they answer different questions. Small-reach posts are mostly seen by superfans, which naturally boosts ERR.
  • Judging video content on likes alone — for Reels and TikToks, shares and saves are often the dominant quality signal; leaving them out of the numerator hides your best posts.
